Queer feminist theory and social movements from the 1990s on have transformed the discourse about women’s rights, lesbianism, and sexuality. By disassociating gender from anatomical determinism, or a scientific notion of sex, critical queer feminists in academia and on-the-street activists opened up a space for the recognition of non-binary and trans* persons.

Ironically, the possibility of deconstructing the binary between sex and gender has fueled a gender panic. For instance, the deeply anti-feminist movement against ‘gender ideology reproduced through institutionalized, modern-day forms of ecclesiastical power and the rise of far-right populism - professes that women should not work, children should not be taught about queerness and gender fluidity, and transgender subjectivity is purely pathological. Around the world, this anti-queer and transphobic political force has established itself in political regimes and neofascist mobs, violently attacking and harassing queer activists and feminist intellectuals.

We now find ourselves in a historical moment, where queer, lesbian, and feminist scholarship must begin to respond in alliance with activists who are currently mobilizing in opposition to the “anti-gender movement” and other forms of gendered and sexualized neoconservative movements.

We invite cross-disciplinary empirical and theoretical scholarly and activist essays, reviews, interviews, and art on the topics of, but not limited to:

  • Emergence: What is the relationship between neoliberal policies, religious institutions, authoritarian governance, and the formation of the neo-fascist anti-gender movements in different parts of the globe? How has the term ‘ideology’ been deployed and appropriated in the anti-gender movement? What is the role of “the child” in mobilizing these movements?

  • Impact: What is the impact of anti-gender, anti-queer, and transphobic ideology on politics and education, including national elections, the rise of autocratic regimes, pedagogy, educational debates, and censorship? Additionally, what are the impacts of neofascists and anti-gender attacks on feminist and lesbian communities, cultural production, and scholarship in different parts of the globe?

  • Resistance: How are lesbian, queer, and feminist activists, artists, and scholars resisting the rise of neo-fascist anti-gender ideology? How do responses to anti-gender ideology create new intersectional coalitions across sexualities, genders, classes, nations, and races?

  • Art and cultural production: How are feminist, queer, and transgender utopic and dystopic visions of the future imagined in the time of rising neo-fascism?

We seek a wide-ranging set of contributions from multiple disciplines and are hoping to represent a diversity of geographical perspectives. We also encourage submissions of short, public-facing, and/or experimental articles, as well as visual art and poetry. Please send your 250–500-word proposal to by June 1, 2022 to lesbianstudiesjournal@gmail.com. Full manuscripts are due by August 15, 2022. Please spread the call far and wide.

The Journal of Lesbian Studies is a peer-reviewed journal published by Taylor and Francis.

“Sound Mirrors no.5”, 2021, archival ink, spray paint on paper, 29 x 21.5 cm. £350

I am working on new series of drawings called “Sound Mirrors”.

More than 100 years ago acoustic mirrors along the coast of England were built with the intention of using them to detect the sound of approaching German zeppelins.

The concave concrete structures were designed to pick up sound waves from enemy aircraft, making it possible to predict their flight trajectory, giving enough time for ground forces to be alerted to defend the towns and cities of Britain.

Invented by Maj William Sansome Tucker and known as sound mirrors, their development continued until the mid-1930s, when radar made them obsolete.

What a year! Thank you to all of my collectors, buyers, friends and strangers for supporting my art. The Margate School and Margate’s community for embracing me and my art residency project, Arts Council England for supporting “A Place In-Between” project, James Payne, Mu magazine, BlueBee magazine, Artlyst for interviews, conversations, photo shoots and features, Michael Petry (Clifford Chance annual Pride exhibition), the feminist library (Queer Dictionary Zine) Jenny Lewis (One Hundred Years Hackney project and my beautiful, powerful portrait), Elisa Cray (Pride portrait project) Lolo Noble (Red Flags project), Jealous gallery for ongoing support, Cell studios for my studio. Anka Dabrowska

A Place In-Between

The Primark Building

Private View: Friday 25th of June 6.00 - 9.00

Exhibition Runs: 26th of June - 26th of July

Artist Anka Dabrowska brings her delicate drawings and assemblage sculptures to Margate for the first time this summer, through a residency at the Margate School, culminating with an exhibition at the old Primark building.

A fitting setting for her practice based and site specific research project ‘A Space In-between’ which ruminates and emerges from her experience of the residency in Margate. Not only as an architectural urban landscape, swelling on the cliff sides of the South coast of England, but also as a peoples and multitude of cultures in tension and coalition, present and past, as we move into the future post pandemic.

Anka’s work assembles itself in these polarities as her materiality is of remnant findings of the exact constructions of urban sites that serve or deny us, that are breached or acquired, developed for or excluding demographics of locals new and old.

In a world of outsiders, immigrants and transience we are continually confronted with the space that is filled with other peoples memories, our own impressions, buildings with intentions and opportunities that are open to some and closed to others.

Anka is perfectly situated to navigate this role of urban anthropologist as her own experience of domestic dwellings, urban spaces, and survival are expansive. Having migrated across borders of countries, class, gender and sexual identity. She is a self proclaimed outsider and this is one of her powers, to connect the dots of human ecologies as she does with the ink that creates her delicate drawings of organic life forms.

Life forms in contrast to the assemblage structures that echo her memory as interpretation of the spaces she visits. Scraps of wood, foam and insulation, heterogeneous material from building sites, skips and back yards are reconstructed to create small scale impressions of the structures of our urban lives. In concrete there is breath, air that penetrates brutalist sedimentary structures that house human existence.

Colour is a retaliation to mass construction and development, as words are sprayed onto wood chip and solid dust, poetry of hope and of dismay, of actualisation and rebellion from the classes below the invisible line of economic hierarchy.

Through her inclusion of graffiti and slogans, the power of voice and of art making are embedded in her structures; the writing is on the wall, as is Anka’s nature for protest, activism and showing up for community.

Anka has been collecting stories as an oral archive from local residents as they share what they want to on the subject of Margate and specifically Arlington House and the old Lido site.

An archive that will be played as a soundscape to the 3D installation of structures and drawings in the Place In-between.

“A Place In-Between” artist residency and exhibition at The Margate School of Art (TMS) April-July 2021

Installation piece example 2019

Installation piece example 2019

“A Place In-Between” is a participatory project to celebrate and to reinforce connections in local communities, between parts of Margate, between land and sea, between myself and my environment.
The heart of the project centres on working with diverse and new audiences located in some of the most deprived wards in the country through talk, interactive workshop, action research and an exhibition. With the focus on the School’s theme of art, society, nature, the impact of Covid-19, diversity and inclusion.

The new work will challenge my current practice in context, location and scale as well as due to the interaction with other artists form a diverse community and the direct/ indirect connection with The Margate School with a focus on the British seaside history from a perspective of an outsider: myself, from elsewhere, living elsewhere.

I will be working with two locations: Arlington House, the 18-storey residential apartment block built in 1964 at the seafront and the 1920’s Lido, the cream coloured derelict Art Deco Complex, closed since the 80s.

Working with ‘the street’, the community and the urban/rural/seafront environment. The interest is in the architecture, history, myths, stories from locals (old, new and transient) and what links the two locations.

ONE+ONE Anka Dabrowska and Stav Bee. The Collaboration.

“TOGETHER ALONE” One month art residency during the COVID-19 crisis.

“There is a difference between self isolation by choice and self isolation by enforced circumstances and this is what we would like to investigate and manifest in this collaboration.

The anxiety, the reflections, the visions and the surrendering social distancing and self isolation offer and demand and how we can document these sensibilities creatively and pictorially.

This residency is aiming to look at the relationship of two artists, who are also lovers and partners, living together and now, under isolation. Creating art under emergency and drastic circumstances. Creating art as revolution (a quiet revolution, perhaps), creating art as protest, resistance, potential, pleasure, hunger, knowledge and freedom (which now can be imaginary and wished for).

This residency will take place, primarily inside the house, with some glimpses in the outside (the garden). The plan is 30 days, with daily sound recordings, photographs and short film makings. Mood reflections, words, from thoughts/ poems/ prose, outfits, no outfits, our usual everyday mask (from before) to a new mask (now). Primarily using analogue media.”

-Stav Bee, visual and performance artist.
